First Mountain Bike adventure!

Yesterday I went to Tribble Mill and went mountain biking.  OMG, I had no idea how much I would enjoy that.  It took me some getting used to and the ride was very bumpy but it was fun finding new ways to navigate the trail each time I went around.  I went 4 times around ...each time being 2.8 miles for a total of 11.2 miles.  It was a gorgeous day ..perfect for riding the trails.  I did something I never thought I could do and it felt so good!  I thought for sure my butt would be so sore today that I wouldn't be able to sit and while I am sore...ALL OVER...my butt doesn't hurt nearly as bad as I thought it would.  Hopefully that's because of the awesome bike shorts I have and the great bike seat I have.  I am really looking forward to some more nice days next week to get back out there!

Today I will hop on the treadmill as it's a misty dreary day.  Hoping to get in at least 2 miles but we'll see how my legs hold out.

This weekend is supposed to be 2 baseball tournaments plus Ben has a scrimmage game tomorrow but it's supposed to rain all weekend. =(  I really hope the weather man is wrong on this one.  I was so looking forward to a long weekend of baseball!!

'Til next time...

In a funk... A reminder post for myself!

I have really been in a funk lately.  I went to our group run this past Saturday at Tribble Mill and felt very discouraged afterwards.  We started by running a circle up through the parking lot and by the lake.  Not too bad but finished in the back..as always.  Then we ran the hill by the bathrooms by the big playground.  That was HARD.  I mean REALLY HARD.  I really pushed myself at first..huffy and puffy and making noises I didn't know I could make ..in public ;)  We were supposed to run up and jog down and do this 8 times as fast as we could.  After about 4 for me, I started in with the dry heaves...again :|   This has happened a few times in the past when I really push myself working out.  Embarrassing..YES, discouraging...YES YES!  One of our trainers explained that this kind of hard work releases lactic acid (of which I plan to read about after writing this post) which is what made my stomach nauseas.  I really don't mind this if only my body would just puke and move on.  Dry heaving and continuing to have a nausea stomach makes for an awful workout that makes me feel as if I just can't push myself any harder.  For my reference: I ate 2 pieces of peanut butter toast, a banana, and some water 1 hour before I started working out.  I have gotten some suggestions from other people on what to try eating and so forth and I will be experimenting with that to hopefully ward this off.  OR maybe I should stop by Waffle House on the way to our group workouts in hopes my body will do a full blown puke from the get-go and I can move on with my workout.  KIDDING...LOL

Well, like I said, I've been in a major funk lately.  I got a text from a friend yesterday telling me she had been looking at Spring Break pics from last year and that she could tell my body had changed.  I bought a bikini for this year and it's been hanging in my closet for me to see every time I open the door.  I REALLY want to feel good about myself in a bathing suit this year.  FOUR WEEKS to go.  I was so excited to get that text from her yesterday that I came home from the grocery store and hopped on the treadmill and ran 2 miles!  This morning I woke up more motivated and went to Tribble Mill to jog the trail around the lake.  I jogged the first lap around (2.8 miles) and walked the 2nd lap around for a total of 5.6 miles!!!  I loved every second of it unlike running at Bay Creek or on the treadmill.  It's beautiful at Tribble Mill and the trail is so quiet.  I really pushed myself today..telling myself that I am my only enemy.  I can tell myself to quit and I'll do it.  I have to keep telling myself that I have to keep encouraging myself.  I want this more than anything.  I want to complete this tri...I want to lose this weight...I want to be a healthier person and a good role model for my children!  I CAN DO THIS!

Busy-ness

I have got to remember about this blog.  It's a great way for me to keep track of my work outs and training.  I just can't seem to remember it.  Oh well...

Last Saturday (2/19/11), all 5 of us ran Run the Reagan 5K!  It was great!  Perfect weather (mid 60s) and sunny!  Way different from last year's snow run.  There were lots of people and I thought I was going to feel totally overwhelmed but I was completely relaxed.  We all started off together but Joseph and Jacob quickly pulled ahead and out of sight.  I stayed steady and even strided (sp) and the next thing I knew, I was passing the 1 mile marker in 11 mins.  Then the hills hit!  I was able to run without stopping for the first 1/2 of the race but once I hit the turn around, there was a huge hill and I had to walk that.  Then I was able to run again until the next hill.  In looking back on it now, I think that walking, running, walking, running might have hindered me a bit because once I saw the finish line and decided I was NOT walking across it and started running again, my legs were not happy.  I am wondering now if I had granny jogged some of the times I had walked if maybe my legs wouldn't have gotten used to walking and maybe it wouldn't have been so hard to start back up again at the end.  I don't know if this is true or just my thinking but it makes sense.  Anywho, I finished in just over 42 mins.  I'm so proud of myself and my entire family!!  What a huge goal we achieved together.  The boys did amazing and so did Joe and I.  Now we all have a starting time to try to beat in future 5K races. =)

Saturday afternoon, we all headed to the ballpark for Jacob's scrimmage game.  I have no idea how that boy played baseball (much less, catcher) after running a 5k (in 35 mins!!).  After Jacob's game, Ben (and Joe) had baseball practice and Joseph helped out for that.  By the time Ben's practice was over at 7:30pm, we were all exhausted.

Sunday I took Joseph and Ben to Joseph's scrimmage game and Joe and Jacob headed out to Jacob's scrimmage game.  After Joseph's game, we headed over to Jacob's game.  That night Jacob was so sore and we all realized he ran a 5K, played a baseball game (as catcher) that same day, and then played another baseball game as the catcher the next day!  By the end of the weekend, we were all spent!!

Monday I met Ali and Julie at Bay Creek for my first ever bike ride.  We rode 11.5 miles in just over an hour!  I had so much fun and burned over 700 calories!

Tuesday I went to group swim and had an awesome workout.  Burned 422 calories!

Today is Wed and I am going to ride at Bay Creek during Jacob's practice tonight.

Tomorrow I will probably ride again...I am loving it!]

Friday morning I am going to take the River boot camp class at the pool and Saturday the group is meeting at Tribble Mill to do some hill work..OH BOY!!!

I'll report later....

Another great weekend

Saturday's workout was another challenge for me but it was great.  We met at 8am at the park and started with a 1 mile run.  This was the first time I actually ran (I mean RAN) around the entire trail the full 1 mile in the "up hill" direction without feeling like I was going to absolutely die at the very end.  I do need to figure out my clothing in the cold weather.  I started with my cold gear under armour, a long sleeve t-shirt, and my big bulky sweatshirt and by the time I was done with the 1 mile warm up, I had to shed the sweatshirt and long sleeve tee.  Luckily it was a nice and sunny morning (unusual this time of year).  I think I will try to find a vest and get some sort of thermal to wear under my under armour.  That way I don't have to wear that bulky sweatshirt when I'm running.

After the 1 mile run, we went to the track and did 1/3 mile runs.  I think the best time I had was just under 13 mins (I'm thinking Kinsey converted this to estimate what would have been a mile at that pace).  Those 1/3 mile runs kicked my butt but I did it!  The last one was the hardest as I had to stop a couple of times and try to throw up..literally.  Sure wish I was successful as I think I would have felt a lot better.  UGH  After our run around the track, we did a little work out doing lunges, planks, and push up.  I'm going to continue this every other day at home as well.    Then Ali and I finished with a brisk 1 mile walk around the track.

We met up at the pool at 11am.  I bought a kick board to practice my freestyle kick.  Oh the burn!  It was awesome though.  I alternated kick board laps and free style laps.  Then I swam 1/4 mile without touching the bottom, sides, or pushing off the pool in 17 mins.  That will give me a time to beat and also assured me that I can swim the 1/4 mile during the tri.  I burned over 1600 calories total during my run and swim on Saturday!!

Sunday was absolutely beautiful outside.  70 degrees without a cloud in sight.  Joseph had baseball practice from 2-4pm at Greystone church so I ran around the building about 8 times just to get in some running.  It was more like jogging. lol  At least it was something.

Plans for this week...Tuesday I will hit the treadmill and do the (6) 1 min sprints at 5.5 mph followed by the work outs (lunges, planks, etc).  Tuesday night is group swim!!  I'm going to try to swim at least once this week but I need to get my contacts ordered.  I hate not being able to see while I'm swimming.  I'll miss Saturday's workout with the trainers but heading to Beaches reunion with the girls!  We're going to run and swim and drink the weekend away!! =D

The forgotten blog.

Oooppss, I sorta, kinda, ummm...yeah, I forgot about this blog until the other day. I'm sure there's no one out there reading anymore but I am going to pick back up on it if only for my daily/weekly diary.  I have officially signed up for the triathlon that I will do on June 4th.  I'm excited and anxious all in one.  I have great trainers who have a very structured program planned for us.  I officially started last Saturday (1/22/11) and so far, so good.  Admittedly, I hate running.  I'd love to run like Forrest Gump but I have learned quickly that I am not a runner.  I will however, continue to train and challenge myself if it kills me.  The good news is that I have learned that I LOVE swimming.  I was on swim team (rec) when I was in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade but never swam after that.  In my adult life, I never even really like going under water as I have bad ear problems and getting water in my ears inevitably leads to ear infections but I went to the pool after our sprint training on Saturday and DID IT!  I eased into it and realized it was like "riding a bike".  I feel so comfortable in the water.  I went back on Monday with a friend of mine to swim for about 30 mins and was able to swim non-stop for 8 laps in 12 mins.  I have since learned it will be 10 laps for the 1/4 mile race so I will work on that next time.  Tuesday night was our first group swim and I was glad to have learned some new techniques that I will be practicing to help me swim more efficiently.  We used the kickboards for a lap and boy did that work my legs.  Note to self: BUY A KICKBOARD!   On Saturday, one of our trainers gave me a goal for this week on the treadmill.  Run for 3 miles...during which I take a minute at a time to run at 5.5 mph for 6 times.  I did this Monday morning and what a workout.  I was able to go for 2.5 miles and only do it 5 times.  My legs were like jello for that last time.  I will try again tomorrow (Friday) and see how I do.  Saturday will be another sprint training run and then off to the pool again.  Weighed myself today and am down to 177 =D  WOW, that scale was able to go below 180.

Where did my weekend go???

Well that weekend just flew by!

I can't believe it's Tuesday already.  Where did my weekend go?  Saturday morning Jacob and Joseph had a baseball game.  I re-started the Couch25K program and did Week1 Day 1 while the boys were at the batting cages before their game.  It was a 30 min walk/run workout.  After their game, we spent the day laying around watching college football.

Sunday we took the boys to Tribble Mill and walked the 2.1 miles around the lake on the trail. It was more a stroll in the woods than a walk around the lake but it was really nice to just take our time.  The boys really enjoyed it and can't wait to go back.

Monday (yesterday), Jacob stayed home sick.  I took him to Minute Clinic for a strep test which was negative so it looks like he's just got a cold.  No fever so he's back to school today.  Ben started complaining that he wasn't feeling good yesterday but never ran and fever so he went to school today.  The boys have their last baseball game tonight (Championship game) so my plan is to do the Couch25k program (week1 day2) before their game starts.  Tomorrow is weigh in day if I can muster up the courage to get on the scale.

Til tomorrow....

Today started out really crappy.  I woke up barely able to keep my eyes open long enough to send the kids off to school and then I fell back to sleep on the couch.  Tired was an understatement this morning.  I'm glad I did lay back down because I woke up feeling a lot better.

I have been meaning to look at apps for my Droid Eris to see if there is anything that I can download that will track the distance I am walking/running when I am at the park.  I finally remembered to do this this morning when I had the time.  I found an app (My Tracks) that had mostly great reviews and the best part...IT'S FREE =)  I downloaded it, grabbed the dog, and out the door I went.  It's a beautiful day! Sunny and 72 degrees.  Perfect for a hike through the trails.  I started the app right at the entrance to the trail, tucked it in my bra (because where else would I carry my phone?), and off I went.  In the end, I had walked 2.08 miles.  Very close to what my friend Stacy had been told.  I was talking to another friend last night at the ballpark who told me about a turn off on the trail where I am missing that last mile of the 5K.  I saw that turn off today.  Yep,  straight up hill.  Umm...I decided to keep on the path I was on.  I'll tackle that hill another day ;)

A perfect day for a walk around the lake!
Cheers!
